Abstract
Justice is one of the most fundamental human and social concepts that can be prominently found in the political thought and conduct of Imam Ali (‘a). The Covenant of Malik Ashtar is one of the most prominent and important historical documents in this field, which is the focus of this article.The purpose of this article is to examine the dimensions of individual and social justice in the Covenant of Malik Ashtar and analyze its place in the intellectual and governmental system of Imam Ali (‘a), which has been prepared using the method of documentary study and content analysis. The concepts of justice, fairness, and moderation are initially discussed in this paper, then the position of justice in the Holy Quran and the justice-seeking character of Imam Ali (‘a) with the focus on Malik Ashtar Covenant are examined. Next, the connection between justice and ethics, the role of social justice, and the position of citizenship rights in this Covenant are discussed.The findings show justice in Imam Ali’s (‘a) thought is not merely a moral principle, but the foundation of the political and social legitimacy of the Islamic government, and the Malik Ashtar Covenant can always be considered and benefited from as a lasting model for fair management in contemporary Islamic societies
